Victoria and Thomas met while living in New York City.

“Thomas was different from anyone I’d met before,” Victoria said. “I couldn’t easily figure him out. He didn’t fit into abut of the usual boxes and was a bit of an enigma.”

After their first date, Victoria told her best friend that she didn’t quite know who she’d gone on a date with.

“He’s a software engineer, but I think he is also a poet,” she said. “I wouldn’t be surprised if he quiet his job one day to be a writer or a street musician.”

Thomas said by date number three, “I knew this was a marriage story.”

A month after their first date, Thomas suggested they take a long-weekend trip to the beach.

“We rented a car and drove out of the city to Amagansett. It was the most blissful few days, and I remember thinking I had never been so happy,” she said.

Thomas proposed with on a six-month cross-country road trip. They were working remotely, but decided toward the end of the trip to take ten days off work and travel and camp up the West Coast.

“I had a feeling it would happen on this trip, but with every landmark checked off – The Grand Canyon, Joshua Tree, San Diego, Sequoia National Park, Yosemite – I started getting a little worried, impatient. Did he somehow forget?” she wondered. “Then we made a last-minute change and instead of continuing to hike and camp, Thomas booked us a relaxing long weekend in Carmel-by-the-Sea.”

They enjoyed beautiful walks and runs on the coastal cliffs and leisurely dinners and finally an afternoon drive down Big Sur. At one of the stops along the Pacific Coast Highway, at a particularly quiet, secluded bench atop a flower-covered hill overlooking the deep blue Pacific Ocean, Thomas got down on one knee and proposed with a ring that Victoria’s parents had purchased years ago from an estate jeweler in New Orleans.

Thomas knew Victoria was expecting the proposal, but he waited for a quiet, simple moment rather than at a national landmark.

“I’m so glad he knew us so well and had the patience to do that. It was perfect,” Victoria said.

And for his part, Thomas said he was a bit relieved not to be responsible for the ring anymore after six months on the road!
