Walking into the wedding ceremony and seeing each other for the first time is a special moment. It is a tradition many couples still cherish. But in recent years, more and more couples are choosing a different path: a first look. This can be just as magical, and at times, even more so.

Here are six reasons to consider incorporating a first look into your wedding day.

1. An Intimate, Emotional Moment

Let’s face it, ceremonies are beautiful, but also everyone’s eyes are on you. A first look gives the couple a private space to be themselves–to cry, laugh, treasure the moment–without the pressure of a crowd. And those raw emotions make some of the most beautiful wedding photos of the day.

2. The Perfect Time to Exchange Letters or Personal Vows

Many couples use a first look to read letters or share personal vows–things they might not feel comfortable saying in front of a crowd. These quiet words and handwritten notes often become keepsakes treasured long after the wedding day ends.

3. More Time Together on Your Wedding Day

Something many couples don’t realize until it’s too late is that by skipping a fist look, you don’t really get alone time until the night is over. After the ceremony it is go-go-go with family photos, the reception, and all the little moments in between. A first look gives you time to slow down and actually be together.

4. Join Cocktail Hour and See More of Your Guests

When most photos are taken before the ceremony, couples are able to enjoy cocktail hour with their guests. That means more time to mingle, laugh, and celebrate before dinner even begins.

5. Photos Are (Mostly) Done Before the Ceremony

Want to have all your wedding photos (wedding party, family portraits and couple portraits) taken before the ceremony? It’s possible if you have a first look. That way, after you say, “I do,” you can relax and just enjoy the rest of the day.

6. Chase the Light and Dodge the Rain

Planning a first look ensures outdoor photos can happen before the sun sets. This is particularly important if your ceremony is set for later in the day or if you are getting married in the winter when the sun sets earlier in the day.

Also, if there is rain in the forecast, having a first look gives you flexibility to sneak outdoors for photos between showers.

Is a First Look Right for You?

Every couple is different. Some dream of that traditional walking down the aisle moment, while others want a quieter, more personal experience before the ceremony begins.

Whatever you decide, make sure it reflects what you both want. Talk it over weighing the pros and cons, and picture how you want your wedding day to unfold.

No matter what you choose, your photos will be stunning as you celebrate your love.
